FOOD PAIRING

YIKES, THIS ISN'T RIGHT!

Hey Angels. What’s going on? It truly warms my heart when I witness individuals making the choice to live a healthy life. In recent times, there has been an increase in the number of Instagram posts related to smoothies, juices, and salads. This is a good sign as it demonstrates that we are taking pride in what we are feeding our bodies. AMAZING! With so much information on the internet, all you need to do is click a few buttons to chance upon “healthy” recipes. Beware of these recipes as many of them have been created by inventive folks with a knack for imagination. Unfortunately, many of your “healthy” meals are, in fact, not paired in an appropriate manner and may thus inhibit optimal digestion. No need to fret, I got you! By the end of this guide, you will be a food pairing expert.

FRUITS

Fruits DO NOT pair well with any other food group. They should be eaten alone. This is due to their quick digestion time. It takes approximately 20-30 minutes for fruits to fully digest in a human body. The majority of foods take much longer to digest. Usually, the body initiates the process of digestion with the food that takes the longest to break down and digest. So, instead of being digested in 20-30 minutes, fruits are backed up for hours awaiting digestion and begin to ferment. (define fermentation) Note: Melons should be eaten amongst other melons, not with other fruits.

Note: REFRAIN FROM ADDING VEGGIES TO YOUR SMOOTHIES

STARCH + PROTEIN Starches & proteins DO NOT pair well. During digestion, two types of acids are released. One acid is useful in breaking down starch & the other helps break down proteins. When both are released they neutralize one another & digestion halts. Subsequently, the foods sit and rot in the stomach. EXAMPLE: Meat and rice - NO. Meat with a salad or veggies? YES

STARCH + SWEETS Starch begins to get digested in the mouth. When consumed with sweets, the enzyme that breaks down starch- ptyalin- is not produced. This happens because of the additional saliva that is generated when consuming sweets. Therefore, the process of digesting starch is halted. EXAMPLE: Bread & a fruity jam? NO VEGETABLES

Vegetables are universal & pair well with every food group barring fruits. I know it's quite a lot to take in and largely goes against our regular eating habits. Who would’ve guessed that all these years, we have been actively contributing to the inhibition of our digestion process? Now, since we are equipped with valuable information, let's start making the required changes to our lifestyle. I do not expect you to make a 180-degree turn with your food habits. Instead, I urge you to make the right choices on a meal-by-meal basis, until you build the required momentum. You got this!

I would be delighted to learn about your progress! So drop a message via email or Instagram.

CALORIES

any of us have lived under the assumption that we should count calories and look at calorie intake as something that should be shamed.
